The Chilling History of Monsanto’s Rise to Power

In the featured video, journalist Abby Martin discusses Monsanto’s rise to power and how the company has managed to saturate the global environment with its toxic chemicals, largely through immoral means.
In May, the University of San Francisco revealed the results from a testing project that began in 2015. The tests, commissioned by the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), found that 93 percent of Americans have detectable levels of the chemical glyphosate in their urine.1
Glyphosate is the most widely used agricultural chemical in the world, and it’s an active ingredient in Monsanto’s broad-spectrum herbicide Roundup. As noted by the Detox Project:2
“Glyphosate, labeled a ‘probable human carcinogen’ by the World Health Organization’s cancer agency IARC in 2015, has now been revealed to be ubiquitous in the first ever comprehensive and validated LC/MS/MS testing project to be carried out across America…
Glyphosate was found … at an average level of 3.096 parts per billion (ppb). Children had the highest levels with an average of 3.586 ppb. The regions with the highest levels were the West and the Midwest with an average of 3.053 ppb and 3.050 ppb respectively.”

Glyphosate Contamination Is ‘Everywhere’

Glyphosate has been found in a wide array of samples, including blood, urine, breast milk, drinking water and more. Results from a German study3 published in 2012 showed that even people who have no direct contact with agriculture have significant concentrations of glyphosate in their urine.
In fact, every single urine sample collected from city dwellers around Berlin tested positive for glyphosate, with values ranging from 0.5 to 2 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml), which is between five and 20 times the permissible upper limit for glyphosate in German drinking water, set at 0.1 ng/ml.
Why do most people have traces of this probable carcinogen in their bodies, regardless of where they live?
The answer is because glyphosate is sprayed on virtually all food crops around the world. In fact, glyphosate is the most heavily used weed killer in history. Roundup is the most commonly used formulation but glyphosate can also be found in other pesticide formulas.4
Since 1974, 1.8 million tons of glyphosate have been applied to US fields; two-thirds of that volume has been sprayed in the last 10 years.5
In 2014 alone, farmers sprayed enough glyphosate to apply 0.8 pounds of the chemical to every acre of cultivated cropland in the US Between 1974 and 2014, 9.4 million tons of glyphosate was used worldwide.

SAD NEWS: House Passes DARK Act Compromise

The House passed a compromise to the DARK Act that will force food distributors to disclose the presence of genetically “engineered” (GE) ingredients with a smartphone scan code. It’s now headed to the White House, where President Obama is expected to sign it.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or genetically “engineered” (GE) foods, are live organisms whose genetic components have been artificially manipulated in a laboratory setting through creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and even viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
GMO proponents claim that genetic engineering is “safe and beneficial,” and that it advances the agricultural industry. They also say that GMOs help ensure the global food supply and sustainability. But is there any truth to these claims? I believe not. For years, I’ve stated the belief that GMOs pose one of the greatest threats to life on the planet. Genetic engineering is NOT the safe and beneficial technology that it is touted to be.
The FDA cleared the way for GE (Genetically Engineered) Atlantic salmon to be farmed for human consumption. Thanks to added language in the federal spending bill, the product will require special labeling so at least consumers will have the ability to identify the GE salmon in stores. However, it’s imperative ALL GE foods be labeled clearly without a smartphone scan code because not everyone owns a smartphone.
The FDA is threatening the existence of our food supply. We have to start taking action now. I urge you to share this article with friends and family. If we act together, we can make a difference and put an end to the absurdity.

Boycott Smart Labels Today

When you see the QR code or so-called Smart Label on a food product, pass it by. Products bearing the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association’s (GMA) Smart Label mark are in all likelihood filled with pesticides and/or GMO ingredients.
The GMA’s 300-plus members include chemical technology companies, GE seed and food and beverage companies. Monsanto, Dow and Coca-Cola are just some of the heavy-hitters in this powerful industry group, which has showed no qualms about doing whatever it takes to protect the interest of its members.
Don’t waste your time searching through their website, which may or may not contain the information you’re looking for. If they insist on wasting your time and making your shopping difficult, why reward them with a purchase? A little known fact is that the GMA actually owns the “Smart Label” trademark that Congress has accepted as a so-called “compromise” to on-package GMO labeling, and that’s another reason why I believe the Smart Label mark is the mark of those with something to hide such as Monsanto.
mark-of-monsantoWill you financially support a corrupt, toxic and unsustainable food system, or a healthy, regenerative one? There are many options available besides big-brand processed foods that are part of the “GMA’s verified ring of deception.” You can:
  • Shop at local farms and farmers markets
  • Only buy products marked either “USDA 100 percent Organic” (which by law cannot contain GMOs), “100 percent Grass-Fed,” or “Non-GMO Verified”
  • If you have a smartphone and you don’t mind using it, download the OCA’s Buycott app to quickly and easily identify the thousands of proprietary brands belonging to GMA members, so you can avoid them, as well as identify the names of ethical brands that deserve your patronage
Last but not least, encourage good companies to reject QR codes and to be transparent and clear with their labeling. This will eventually ensure that all GMO foods can easily be identified by the GMA’s “verified ring of deception” mark that is the Smart Label.
Campbell’s, Mars, Kellogg’s, ConAgra and General Mills all vowed to voluntarily comply with Vermont’s GMO labeling law by labeling all of their foods sold across the U.S. Will their plans change if the current “compromise” gets passed by the Senate? That remains to be seen, but if you like these companies, I would encourage you to reach out to them and ask them to remain steadfast in their promise.

Americans now spending BILLIONS on natural health remedies

Americans now spending BILLIONS on natural health remedies including superfoods and homeopathy, while denouncing Big Pharma's failed medicine

(NaturalNews) As more and more Americans are starting to realize that conventional medicine does not hold the answers to their problems, their spending on natural health remedies is rising. In fact, a study that was recently released by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) shows that Americans spend $30.2 billion on complementary health approaches each year. When you consider the fact that they spend $328.8 billion on out-of-pocket health expenditures overall, the significant portion of health-related spending occupied by alternative remedies becomes quite clear.

The study used data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, which was then weighted to come up with estimates that more accurately represent the nation's population at large.

According to the researchers, one out of every five Americans over the age of 4 spent money on at least one complementary health approach. Some of the treatments that fall under this category include tai chi, massage therapy, homeopathic treatment, energy healing therapy, chiropractic manipulation and hypnosis.

Natural product supplements like fish oil, probiotics and digestive enzymes were more popular than visits to alternative health practitioners. This type of expense is not typically covered by health insurance, which means that families who have higher incomes tend to use them more often than those in lower income brackets.

Another interesting finding was that the $12.8 billion spent on natural product supplements alone in 2012 is equal to about a quarter of the amount of money spent on prescription drug use that year, which was $54 billion.

Complementary healthcare users aged four and older spent $510 per year on average on these approaches.

'People are fed up'

The National Products Association's Executive Director, Daniel Fabricant, who also happens to be a former FDA Director of Dietary Supplement Programs, said:

"People are fed up with the type of care they get from primary physicians that is covered by insurance. Across the board, people are looking for ways to stay healthy on their own."

He pointed out that the average doctor sees 40 patients a day, spending just seven minutes with each one on average. This means that people don't feel engaged with their doctors, and are taking matters into their own hands.

Big Pharma losing ground

Another factor at play here is people's growing disillusionment with the deceitful practices of Big Pharma, whose overpriced medications often do little to cure problems, and can leave people in worse shape than when they started, thanks to their many side effects. Pharmaceutical firms are also known to engage in deceptive research tactics, and people are now seeing for themselves how many of their "solutions" send people into a cycle of dependency without really curing anything.

According to The Economist, Americans spend a whopping 20.9 percent of their total household expenditures on health costs, far exceeding other countries. As more people realize that Big Pharma profits from people being sick, they are turning to alternative options.

This sea-change in attitude can also be evidenced by consumers' increasing preference for organic produce. The world's second-largest retailer, Costco, announced this year that organic sales had jumped 72 percent since 2008, with its organics sales totaling $4 billion last year.

The message is clear: Americans are fed up with Big Pharma. They are tired of the lies. People don't want to load their bodies up with the dangerous chemicals found in medications. They don't want their fruits and vegetables to be laced with pesticides. And their spending habits are starting to back this up. One can only hope this trend will continue, with natural health spending eventually outstripping that of conventional medicine.

Top 10 inexpensive food items that can PREVENT nearly every disease and disorder known to mankind

Top 10 inexpensive food items that can

PREVENT nearly every disease and

disorder known to mankind

Natural medicine
(NaturalNews) Nothing's more true than the old adage, "An ounce of prevention is better than a
pound of cure." Not only does that ounce of prevention save you the nightmare of being sick,
probably missing work and most likely accumulating medical bills, but that same "ounce" of
prevention may only literally weigh an ounce and cost less than 15 bucks.

In America, people have been brainwashed by the medical industrial complex into believing that
food can't prevent or cure anything, but just the opposite is true. In fact, there's a natural cure
for every health ill under the sun, and the secret "recipe" involves taking a couple of 5 dollar bills
out of your purse or wallet, buying the item, opening the package and putting the remedy in
your mouth. It's a super simple process that seems too easy, and that's exactly why so many
people fail to have the faith required to actually walk the walk, so they won't have to spend
hundreds or even thousands of dollars at doctor's offices and hospitals – those dreadful places
where health problems often get much, much worse.

The best advice in the world is free, so get ready to get smart and stay healthy. Here are the top
10 most inexpensive food (and supplement) items that can prevent and usually heal nearly every
disease and disorder known to mankind:

#1. Oil of oregano (most popular in capsules or tincture form): Nature's most reliable antibiotic
(also anti-fungal and antibacterial) kills pollen allergies fast, helps with sinus problems and
respiratory infections, and can defend against those "throwing up" viruses kids bring home from
school. How? One of the active agents in oregano, rosmarinic acid, is a powerful antioxidant that
supports immune power. One supplement helping of oil of oregano gives you the antioxidant
punch of eating 42 apples! Oregano oil also has anti-inflammatory properties, because it
contains beta-caryophyllin (E-BCP), which can be beneficial for people suffering from
osteoporosis, arteriosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. So much for those expensive
prescriptions! Ask your Naturopath.

#2. Licorice root (often sold in supplement capsule form): This natural remedy has a wonderful
list of benefits, and may be the most often overlooked of all natural remedies. Got asthma,
canker sores, coughs, or emphysema? Check out licorice root. Got heartburn, fungal infections
or liver troubles? What about a sore throat, arthritis, or yeast infections? The glycyrrhizic acid in
licorice root even helps with nervousness, anxiety and depression, by encouraging proper
functioning of the adrenal glands.

#3. Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil: The oil from these seeds is amazing at promoting heart
health and preventing heart disease and strokes, thanks to its three-to-one ratio of omega 3 and
omega 6 fatty acids. It also nourishes hair, skin and nails. It can be used topically or mixed in
your smoothies. It's got a nutty flavor that's rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which is amazing
for cognitive function and eye health. Talk about Alzheimer's prevention! Plus, hemp seed oil is
mercury free, unlike many fish oils.

#4. Coconut oil: Ever heard of oil pulling? Dentists won't mention it, unless they're holistic,
because you won't be suffering any more cavities. Just swish a tablespoon of coconut oil around
in your mouth for 10 minutes after brushing and flossing, and wave bye-bye to those cavities.
Amazing for brain health and skin health, and even great for cooking, coconut oil is another
great
source of omega 3s and a defender against Alzheimer's and cancer. Trader Joe's brand tastes
amazing and is quite inexpensive.

#5. Aloe: Looking to fix constipation, heartburn or stomach aches? Want to regulate blood sugar,
detoxify the colon, lose weight, burn more calories, improve circulation, strengthen immunity,
regulate blood pressure and reduce inflammation, all in one fell swoop? Get out a couple of 5
dollar bills and hit the health food store, or just buy an aloe plant and keep it growing while you
use the juice!

#6. Lemon juice: Want a daily superfood tonic that contains cancer-fighting compounds and is
super cheap? Combine lemon juice and baking soda with filtered water. Raise that body pH with
a natural remedy that outperforms chemo drugs!

#7. Kombucha: Oh yes! "The immortal health elixir" of the ancient Chinese has been a health
anecdote for more than two millennia. Made from a fermented sweet tea, this fizzy symbiotic
colony of good bacteria will forever replace that soda!

#8. Ginger: Ginger root's benefits are too long to list; you could write an encyclopedia. Start off
by fighting cancer, helping with IBS, protecting against Alzheimer's and reducing fat accumulation
.

#9. Turmeric: The "Queen of Spices" has properties that are antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal,
anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic and anti-inflammatory. If every oncologist in America would
simply prescribe turmeric instead of chemo drugs, we would see a massive decline in cancer
deaths.

#10. Chia seeds: Two tablespoons a day gives you 7 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein, 205 mg
of calcium and 5 grams of omega 3s. Wow!

Organic is key because it does NOT contain pesticides or toxic herbicides!

Remember to always first look for organic versions of these food items to be sure that they don't contain
pesticides. Also, you can rely on the Health Ranger to inspect foods, superfoods and supplements for heavy metal toxins that even the "organic" label doesn't verify. Check out Mike Adams' new book available for pre-sale now, Food Forensics, that examines multiple genres of nature's best remedies, and shows you exactly how to distinguish the cleanest supplements and foods on earth.

Will Popular Marijuana Strains Become Like Fine Wines?

Will Popular Marijuana Strains Become Like Fine Wines?

I’m a recreational cannabis refugee. I moved to the Pacific Northwest to avoid the potential of being thrown in a cage for smoking a flower that makes my life better.
I’m old enough to remember when good marijuana was rare and called “kine buds.” Kine comes from Hawaiian pigeon speak for “the good kind.” Since Hawaii has had a long love affair with potent pakalolo(crazy smoke), with strains like Maui Waui becoming world famous, kine became universal slang for “the good weed” even for a teenager like me in the 1990s in Connecticut.
Brick weed of unknown origin was much more common in those days. As the legalization of cannabis expands, so does the knowledge of the best strains and their effects. Today brick weed is all but extinct in the United States while genetic strains of cannabis are becoming very sophisticated.
Crowd sourcing experiences may prove more accurate than clinical studies could ever be. Sites like Leafly and others have curated thousands of experiences about how different strains and doses of cannabis affect people. Although marijuana effects seem to be unique for each individual, much like various alcohol drinks are, some common traits are identifiable.
In a previous article, I described the general differences between sativa and indica strains. Sativa has a more energetic, heady and creative effect, while indica is more pain-relieving and sleep-inducing.
cannabis-infographic1
But like fine wines, there are subtleties to consider.
Some strains are bred to maximize output of flowers with compounds like tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the primary mind-altering ingredient in cannabis. While other strains are bred to limit the THC and emphasize other beneficial compounds to help children cope with debilitating illnesses.Charlotte’s Web is a notable low-THC strain produced to reduce seizures in kids without getting them high.
Watch this brief clip of CNN’s special Weed about the people behind Charlotte’s web:
There are 5 major cannabinoids THCCBDCBNCBC and CBG. Each strain of marijuana has a different composition of these cannabinoids in order to achieve different effects. Clever botanists then deliberately breed strains to optimize certain traits and features.
effects-of-cannabinoids
Original genetic strains of cannabis are called Landraces. They are the Holy Grail for strain hunters and breeders who will go to great lengths to acquire them. The short film below follows cannabis breeding legend, Arjan Roskam, and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country’s rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades.

Landraces have been bred together to create some world-renowned strains like White Widow which is 60% South Indian indica and 40% Brazilian sativa and boasts 20-22% THC. The name White Widow refers to how the strain’s huge colas become snow covered with white crystal trichomes towards the end of their flowering period. White Widow has since spawned many other popular strains like White Russian, White Rhino, and Blue Widow.
Highly tailored cannabis strains are beginning to resemble fine wine whereby the richness is found in the varying scents, flavors, sensations, origin stories and growing method. Even name brands are beginning to take shape with celebrity brands leading the charge.
Music legend and longtime defender of marijuana, Willie Nelson, has launched a premium quality brand called Willie’s Reserve which sells multiple strains in elegant packaging. Will Willie’s Reserve White Widow become comparable to Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon?
Blunt-smoking Snoop Dogg has gotten into the action with his brand Leafs By Snoop. Singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge launched a cannabis-infused wine tincture “Private Reserve.”
What’s more, the day job of the current Libertarian presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, who’s polling in double-digits against Clinton and Trump, is the president and CEO of Cannabis Sativa Inc. The publicly traded company focuses on high-quality cannabis products and public policy.
With corporate green fever heating up, some people are worried that agriculture giants like Monsanto will bully their way into the market and create a mutant GMO weed to compete with organic and heirloom strains.
Ultimately, the competition in a legal recreational market will likely bring a rush of new kine buds. Move over wine snobs, make room for the cannabis connoisseurs.

3 Common Scams the Food Industry Uses to Hide Counterfeit Foods

3 Common Scams the Food Industry Uses to Hide Counterfeit Foods

Anna HuntStaff Writer
Waking Times
The food industry scams its customers on a daily basis. The quicker you realize this, the faster you’ll start to learn just which foods to look out for and how you can improve your diet.
Author of the book Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don’t Know What You’re Eating and What You Can Do About It, Larry Olmsted, is a food journalist that explains how you are being fooled every day by the food industry. Olmsted has researched the approach that the food industry takes to food labeling and marketing. He is of the opinion that people are being fooled more often than they realize:
“Some of the adulteration — when they cut olive oil with other oils or substances, they cut honey with corn syrup — that is a violation of the law. But a lot of it is labeling issues that are unregulated. Like ‘natural’ would be the perfect example. You could slap ‘natural’ on pretty much any food product. It’s meaningless.”
Let’s take a look at three common misconceptions used by the food industry to scam customers.

1. Seafood Is Healthy

Most people think that seafood is healthy. Yet, questionable food quality and fraud is common in this food segment. The first thought that comes to mind when it comes to seafood contamination is mercury, but the problem is much more far-reaching.
“Ninety-one percent of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported and current FDA law mandates that just two percent of that be inspected every year.” (source)
This leaves a lot of room for fakery.
In his book, Olmsted discusses a 2012 study of New York City seafood done by scientists at Oceana, a nonprofit advocacy group, which tested seafood authenticity using DNA. They discovered fakes at 58% of 81 stores sampled and at all of the 16 sushi restaurants studied. Many sushi varieties you think you are eating are substituted with easier to obtain fish. For example, the Oceana study found that only about 6% of red snapper sold was real red snapper, while the remaining 94% were other types of fish such as tilefish or tilapia.
Speaking of tilapia, it is one of the most common farm-raised fish purchased in the U.S., often imported from China, which is the world’s largest producer. These farms suffer from water pollution and often overuse chemicals and antibiotics. These details are never revealed on seafood packaging. In natural ponds used to raise tilapia, shrimp and other fish, also a big food segment in China, industry secrets include contamination by sewage, industrial waste and agricultural runoff.
Unless you are buying seafood that has been certified for its authenticity, as for example with the logo “Alaska Seafood: Wild, Natural, Sustainable,” you may be getting less than you bargained for. Everyone has been so focused on questionable practices in cattle factory farming, but just as many chemicals and antibiotics can be present in seafood.

2. Gourmet or ‘Natural’ Foods Assure Quality

The gourmet food sector, encompassing foods such as specialty meats, cheeses, oils, etc., brings in about $1 billion in revenues in the U.S. alone. Are the foods in this sector really worth the higher prices? Do they offer a higher quality and more complex taste?
The gourmet label is one best tricks of food marketers. Just as with the word ‘natural’ so often used on food packaging, putting ‘gourmet’ on food labels, or adding some type of ‘quality seal’, plays on the buyer’s subconscious mind. It indicates that the product has met some form of certification criteria. These tricks are used on labels to justify higher prices, but usually there is no certification or higher quality.
Many labeling tricks are used by food producers to justify premium prices. Colors are used to influence perceptions, i.e. the color green is associated with healthy. Claims about reduced unhealthy ingredients such as sodium, fat, or sugar are used to make foods appear better. Misleading brand names, such as “Healthy Choice” or “Go Natural,” are used to appeal to health-conscious people. All these foods, regardless of what’s on the label, are typically still filled with chemical additives just like any mainstream alternative.
Misleading labels are one of the biggest food industry scams ever. You have to read the ingredients to establish which brands can be trusted.

3. The Basics Are Difficult to Ruin

Basic staple foods cannot possibly be fake. Or can they? Olive oil, honey, maple syrup, rice, coffee, etc. Most of us don’t think twice before buying these foods because, really, how is it possible to ruin the basics? Come to find out, many basic foods imported in bulk, or mass-produced, could be considered counterfeit foods.
Olive oil is a good example. Mass imports often contain additives such as soybean and peanut oils. In 1981, there was even a big controversy about Spanish olive oil being mixed with aniline, a chemical used in making plastic. The problem is that these additives are never listed. Anyone can label their product as ‘pure,’ and no one is checking for fraud. Don’t take olive oil for granted. Look for certifications such as “COOC Certified Extra Virgin” or the international EVA and UNAPROL labels.
Maple syrup and honey are another great example. Most grocery store shelves have more fake honey and fake maple syrup, mixed with or made up entirely of sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, than the real stuff. Always read the labels and, if available, buy the organic versions of these products.
Another example, sadly, is coffee. Unscrupulous producers may dump fillers such as corn, soybeans, barley, triticale, wheat, rye, brown sugar, rice or even twigs into ground coffee. If you want to be sure that you are drinking the real deal, buy whole beans rather than ground coffee.

How to Overcome Food Industry Scams

Do not be discouraged. Real food is readily available if you are willing to look outside of the mainstream food environment. You need to explore your local farmer’s markets and find trustworthy certification programs.
