This Is What Happens To Your Cells When You Experience Happiness

Waking Times
Too much research has been devoted to the science of stress, depression and the connection to disease and not enough to the biology of joy. If a greater emphasis was placed on why we don’t go to doctors when we are feeling optimistic, happy, and joyful, there would be less value and importance placed on the emotional states that coincidentally generate more money for those manufacturing medication. There are many ways to experience pleasure in our brains and happiness might be the one emotion that prevents and reverses the cascade of cellular events that lead to disease.
Artificial Happiness
A lot of people get addicted to chemicals – alcohol, cocaine, amphetamine, heroin, and nicotine. Why do they do that, and why aren’t they happy? It is because brains have a variety of chemical systems that regulate their electrical activities in waking and sleeping, and the addictive drugs artificially stimulate those systems, but the feelings are not those of joy.
For example, a chemical called ‘dopamine’ is broadly spread through the brain by specialized nerve cells, when a person achieves some kind of reward, such as by satisfying hunger and thirst, winning a game, or passing an examination. Dopamine is often called a “reward hormone”. Its chemical actions are produced also by closely related compounds such as amphetamine and cocaine. They give feelings of bouyant optimism, energy, power, and knowledge.
This same chemical linked to drug addiction may also contribute to obesity, researchers have found.
It is not surprising that people who have no other avenues to success, living in poverty and hopelessness, will spend their food money on some transient chemical bliss. But that isn’t happiness, and even people who are bloated on academic or business success, and who feel elation, aren’t liable to confuse that feeling with happiness.
Other chemicals called ‘endorphins’ act in the brain as natural pain relievers. Their action is imitated by heroin and morphine, also alcohol. Again, it is small wonder that people who suffer from the emotional pains of regret, shame, guilt and despair might find relief from their demons in forgetfulness. But that isn’t happiness.
Yet another chemical called ‘serotonin’ is important in bringing mental relaxation as an important condition for getting to sleep. We don’t really know yet what sleep is for, but we know that we can’t survive without it. The relief from agitation and anxiety that is mediated by serotonin leads also to recovery from some forms of depression. That is why the chemical fluoxitine (Prozac) has become so popular. It doesn’t act like serotonin, but it prolongs the action of what little serotonin the brain is producing, if it is in short supply. But return to tranquillity from anxiety and depression is not the same thing as happiness.
So, is there a chemical for joy? Scientists are beginning to understand that this is a wrong-headed question. There is no such chemical, and even to ask the question is to expose a deep ignorance about how brains – and people – actually work.
Happiness Is Directly Linked To Our Health
Dr Derek Cox, Director of Public Health at Dumfries and Galloway NHS, suspects that for decades health professionals have been missing a big trick in improving the health of the nation.
“We’ve spent years saying that giving up smoking could be the single most important thing that we could do for the health of the nation.
“And yet there is mounting evidence that happiness might be at least as powerful a predictor, if not a more powerful predictor than some of the other lifestyle factors that we talk about in terms of cigarette smoking, diet, physical activity and those kind of things.”
The science of happiness is increasingly suggesting a link between happiness and health.
Andrew Steptoe, the British Heart Foundation Professor of Psychology at University College London, has found that happier people also have greater protection against things like heart disease and stroke.
“We know that stress which has bad effects on biology, leads to those bad changes as far as health is concerned,” said Mr Steptoe.
“What we think is happening is that happiness has the opposite effect and has a protective effect on these same biological pathways”.
What Happens To Our Cells When We Are Happy?
The increasing prevalence and debilitating effects of depressive symptoms, has motivated intense research investigating the biological basis of mood disorders and negative affect. However, the immense volume of research investigating pathophysiology has yet to be paralleled by research of positive affect.
Specifically, this emerging field is focused on identifying contributing factors and various effects of positive subjective experiences and emotions, such as hope, optimism, and spirituality. Positive affect is a term encompassing various components, including happiness, contentment, life satisfaction, optimism, and well-being. It appears thathappy people who are highly effective have the same habits.
The study of positive psychology is encouraging more researchers to study a proactive prevention illness by identifying attitudes and personality traits that contribute to positive mood and increase quality
of life.
For example, happy people, as compared with less happy people, tend to have greater immune system functioning, a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and report greater marriage and job satisfaction. It is therefore valuable to develop a deeper understanding of the positive affect by investigating its biological basis. Several studies have begun to investigate potential biological markers of positive affect.
Research investigating the association between potential biological markers. Depressed individuals have a lower concentration of prolactin. Most people associate prolaction with enabling women to produce milk, however, it is influential over a large number of functions.
Prolactin also plays an essential role in: metabolism; regulation of the immune system; and pancreatic development. In humans, prolactin is produced at least in the pituitary, uterus, breast, lymphocytes, leukocytes and prostate. As prolactin response increases, so do the positive effects associated with happiness and this correlates with cognition and neural connectivity affecting our ability to perceive remember, and reinforce existing neural connections.
To protect the brain from stress, it releasese a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a neurotrophin which functions to translate activity into synaptic and cognitive plasticity in the adult animal. This BDNF has a protective and also reparative element to memory neurons and acts as a reset switch. That’s why we often feel so at ease and things are clear after moments of stress and eventually happy.
At the same time, endorphins, another chemical to fight stress, is released from the brain. Endorphins main purpose is to minimize discomfort and block the feeling of pain by stimulating pleasure centers, many of which even lead to euphoria.
20minutewalkchuck9
BDNF and endorphins are the reasons exercise makes us feel so good. The somewhat scary part is that they have a very similar and addictive behavior like morphine, heroine or nicotine. The only difference? Well, it’s actually good for us.
Endorphins are chemicals that are able to cross through the gaps between neurons in order to pass along a message from one to the next. There are many different kinds, and much remains to be learned about their different purposes and functions, but endorphins can be released with many different types of activities.
Endorphins act as both a painkiller and as the pay-off for your body’s reward system. When you hurt yourself (or eat a hot chili pepper), you may get a big dose of endorphins to ease the pain. You may also get an endorphin blast from talking to a stranger, eating a satisfying meal or being exposed to ultraviolet light. (Everyone has different amounts of endorphins, and what may trigger an endorphin rush for one person could very well produce a dud for someone else.) The pay-off in the form of your body tapping into its own stash of “opiates” is to let you know you’ve had enough — and convince you to do it again sometime soon.
Overall, the net benefit of cells undergoing all the above changes leads to:
  • stimulating the growth of nerve connections.
  • improving cognition by increasing mental productivity.
  • improving our ability to analyze and think.
  • affecting our view of our surroundings.
  • increasing attentiveness.
  • leading to even more happy thoughts.
Why Happiness Is Not Made By a Chemical
Where we humans find joy is in surmounting this solipsistic barrier between us and sharing our feelings and comforts. We cannot ever really cross it, but, a bit like neighbors chatting over a fence, we can be together. However, there is more to this communion than mere talking. There is trust, which underlies true friendships and partnerships. What is the chemistry of trust?
Answers are found when we look back on our mammalian ancestors. Raising a helpless infant to childhood requires intensive parental care, which comes with bonding between the parents and the infant. Now, how does a carefree child, when it has grown up, become a parent? This change in role requires a catastrophic change in beliefs, attitudes and values to make new parents. We humans would say that they fall in love, first with each other, and then with their offspring.
Scientists have learned that, when animals mate and give birth, specialized chemicals are released into their brains that enable their behavior to change. Maternal and paternal patterns of nursing and caring appear. The most important is a chemical called ‘oxytocin’. It doesn’t cause joy. On the contrary, it may cause anxiety, because it melts down the patterns of connections among neurons that hold experience, so that new experience can form. We become aware of this meltdown most dramatically as a frightening loss of identity and self control, when we fall in love for the first time.
Bonding comes not with the meltdown, but with the shared activity afterward, in which people learn about each other through cooperation. Knowing another person doesn’t come with foreplay and orgasm. It comes in cooperative activities during and afterward. Trust emerges not just with sex, but also with vigorous shared activity in sports and combat, through which people bond into teams by learning to trust each other.
So oxytocin is not a happiness chemical, but a brain tool for building trust and this is well known in mother-child bonds. Perhaps a million years ago our ancestors learned how to use this mammalian mechanism to promote social bonding beyond sexual union, in order to form groups and tribes. They did it, and still do it, with dancing, rhythmic clapping and chanting, singing and making music together all day and night, into exhaustion and collapse. When they awaken, they are reborn.
Nietsche realized this. Emil Durkheim and other anthropologists have shown how people engage in Dionysian orgies and religious ceremonies, as the most effective way in which to create group identities. The joy they experience comes in dancing and singing with each other, thereby forming the bonds of trust. Trust comes when we are able to predict what other people will do, and we achieve that by repeated cooperative actions.
Aristotle wrote: “Happiness is activity of the soul in accordance with virtue.” That is rather abstract. We can see virtue as a set of shared goals for the good of ourselves and our children. Joy comes with activities that we share with people we have learned to trust, and that enable us to share meaning across the solipsistic barrier that separates each of us from all others.
So happiness is not made by a chemical. That would be the same as treating a violin sonata as nothing but rubbing horse hair on strings of cat gut in order to make a wooden box resonate. Violin makers have to know their materials to make one, and physicians have to know about the brain chemicals in order to treat patients, when the chemistry of brains has gone wrong, but they can’t give us a pill to make us happy. We create our own joys, and we feel happiest in learning to trust each other.
The Power of Positive Thoughts
As far as your brain, every thought releases brain chemicals. Being focused on negative thoughts effectively saps the brain of its positive forcefulness, slows it down, and can go as far as dimming your brain’s ability to function, even creating depression. On the flip side, thinking positive, happy, hopeful, optimistic, joyful thoughts decreases cortisol and produces serotonin, which creates a sense of well-being. This helps your brain function at peak capacity.
Happy thoughts and positive thinking, in general, support brain growth, as well as the generation and reinforcement of new synapses, especially in your prefrontal cortex (PFC), which serves as the integration center of all of your brain-mind functions.
In other words, your PFC not only regulates the signals that your neurons transmit to other brain parts and to your body, it allows you to think about and reflect upon what you are physically doing. In particular, the PFC allows you to control your emotional responses through connections to your deep limbic brain. It gives you the ability to focus on whatever you choose and to gain insight about your thinking processes. The PFC is the only part of your brain that can control your emotions and behaviors and help you focus on whatever goals you elect to pursue. It helps you grow as a human being, change what you wish to change, and live life the way you decide!
Why Optimism Leads to Greater Happiness
Neuroscientists have discovered that people who have a more cheerful disposition and are more prone to optimism generally have higher activity occurring in their left PFC. But that’s a brain explanation. Interestingly, behavioral scientists have observed fascinating differences between optimists and pessimists. Optimism, for example, involves highly desirable cognitive, emotional, and motivational components. Optimistic people tend to have better moods, to be more persevering and successful, and to experience better physical health. One factor may be simply that optimists attribute good events to themselves in terms of permanence, citing their traits and abilities as the cause, and bad events as transient (using words like “sometimes” or “lately”), or the fault of other people. In addition, optimists:
  • Lead happy, rich, fulfilled lives
  • Spend the least amount of time alone, and the most time socializing
  • Have good relationships
  • Have better health habits
  • Have stronger immune systems
  • Live longer than pessimists
On the flip side, pessimistic people explain good events by citing transient causes, such as moods and effort, and bad events as permanent conditions (using words like “always” or “never”). A study by a University of British Columbia researcher found that some people aregenetically predisposed to see the world darkly. Negativity is all-pervasive, it seems. Pessimists:
  • Automatically assume setbacks are permanent, pervasive, and due to personal failings.
  • Are eight times more likely to be depressed than optimists
  • Perform worse at school and work
  • Have rockier interpersonal relationships
  • Die sooner than optimists.
According to Sonia Lyubomirsky, a University of California researcher, unhappy people spend hours comparing themselves to other people, both above and below themselves on the happiness scale; happy people didn’t compare themselves with anyone.
According to a study from Lund University, collective picture of what makes us happy is more about relationships and people, and less about things.
The good news is that you can use your mind to train your brain to tamp down the negative thoughts that lead to pessimism, while ramping up the types of positive thoughts that lead to optimism. You can be the master of the neuronal changes that will lead to greater happiness, and the rewiring starts in those teensy miracles known as your brain cells, or neurons. Even if depression runs in your family, you have the capability of improving the way your brain functions, of setting up neuronal roadblocks and diminishing the neuronal patterns linked to negative thinking. You may not be able to eradicate a genetic disposition towards depression, but you can greatly reduce its impact and its reoccurrence.
Negative Thinking, Negative Balance
Negative thinking slows down brain coordination, making it difficult to process thoughts and find solutions. Feeling frightened, which often happens when focused on negative outcomes, has been shown to decrease activity in your cerebellum, which slow the brain’s ability to process new information-limiting your ability to practice creative problem solving. Additionally, the fear factor impacts your left temporal lobe, which affects mood, memory, and impulse control.
Your frontal lobe, particularly your PFC, decides what is important according to the amount of attention you pay to something and how you feel about it. Thus, the more you focus on negativity, the more synapses and neurons your brain will create that support your negative thought process.
Your hippocampus provides the context of stored memories, which means the emotional tone and description your mind creates can potentially rewire your brain by creating stronger neuronal pathways and synapses. What you think and feel about a certain situation or thing can become so deeply ingrained that you will have to work hard to dismantle the negative connections and rewire your brain in order to be less afraid, to think positively, to believe that dreams can come true, to trust that your efforts will be successful.
Train Your Brain to Think More Positively
One of the oldest precepts of neuroscience has been that our mental processes (thinking) originate from brain activity: that our brain is in charge when it comes to creating and shaping our mind. However, more recent research has shown that it can also work the other way around: that focused, repetitive mental activity can affect changes in your brain’s structure, wiring, and capabilities.
The actions we take can literally expand or contract different regions of the brain, firing up circuits or tamping them down. The more you ask your brain to do, the more cortical space it sets up to handle the new tasks. It responds by forging stronger connections in circuits that underlie the desired behavior or thought and weakening the connections in others. Thus, what you do and what you think, see, or feel is mirrored in the size of your respective brain regions and the connections your brain forms to accommodate your needs.
What does all this mean? It means that what we think, do, and say matters; that it affects who we become on the outside, the inside, and in our brain. Mostly, it means that you can retrain your brain to be more positive.
Start by thinking happy thoughts, looking on the bright side, and refocusing your brain when negative thoughts occur. Your mind has the ability to determine how your brain thinks about what happens in your life. Use it to your own advantage to reframe events and think positively.

3 Essential Practices for Consciousness Evolution

May 4, 2014 |
By  | Reply
Consciousness evolution is the process of becoming universal consciousness. In order to do so, all that we need to do is simply open up a channel within us so that universal consciousness can flow through us uninhibited, because our highest self, the highest level of our consciousness is universal consciousness.
This is the process of consciousness evolution and it is a completely natural process, indeed one that each one of us will go through at one point or another. It is guaranteed.
We have two aspects to our being. We have a radiative aspect which is always changing: our thoughts and emotions; and we have an observing awareness which is collapsing towards singularity where we are one and connected with the rest of the universe, all beings, and where we are united with our source of all-possibility: pure consciousness. Awakening consciously to the former is the path of consciousness evolution.
Our thoughts radiate from the event horizon of our being which is the boundary between thought and silent awareness. Yet there is a lens which determines how the pure energy of consciousness expresses itself through us in our thoughts and emotions which directly manifests in our lives and in our bodies.
That lens is belief.
Imagine belief as a lens much like the negatives on a roll of film which creates an image on a screen whenlight shines through. When you change the negative, when you change the belief, the image on the screen changes. Your body and your life is a three-dimensional hologram defined by your beliefs, and our society is the collective holographic image we have co-created with one another and with the Earth hologram we call nature, within a greater hologram we call our solar system, our galaxy, our universe, and so on to infinity.
And yet the most important thing to remember is not that your belief determines your hologram, but that if your belief system was out of the way altogether then pure consciousness which is energy of the highest vibration – love – would radiate from yours being and express perfection and abundance everywhere in your life. Not if your belief system was changed, but if your belief system was abolished. And that is where thought and meditation comes it.
Thought is a natural part of yourself, so there is no reason for you to feel the need to stop thinking altogether. We just have to learn how to think consciously. However, it is important to periodically strive for (and eventually achieve) inner silence in order to open ourselves up so that our thoughts, emotions, and actions can channel through us unadulterated from a higher level of consciousness within.
All beings are expressions of the universe, God-in-action, but the reason why we have murderers, rapists, imperfection of any kind, and sleeping people of varying degrees is not because some people are inherently good or bad, compassionate or evil. There is no such thing.
The reason we see negativity is because there is so much distortion in the high-vibration energy from the lens of our beliefs and the chaos created by unconscious thinking. The natural high energy of consciousness ends up being distorted and misdirected by so many different limiting beliefs and negative habits, thoughts, and behaviors that it ends up being expressed in harmful ways. Either harmful in an expressive way towards another human being (or yourself), or it is repressed and internalized and it manifests itself as disease in the body.
Therefore peace in the world and health in the body both stem from inner peace and inner silence: clearing out the clutter within ourselves.
I know in my heart that everyone can change if they want to. It is just a matter of cleaning out theprogramming.

Three Steps to Consciousness Evolution

These three steps are the most essential steps in order to raise your level of consciousness, cultivate personal mastery, and thus engage in the process of consciousness evolution.

1. Live on the Event Horizon between Thought and Silence

“Be mindful of your self-talk; it’s a conversation with the universe.” - Unknown
In order to live consciously and to think consciously, we must live on the border between thought and silence. Only then are we in the best possible position to be truly self-aware and to manifest because this is the only position where we can follow Deepak Chopra’s succinct process of manifestation: “Slip into the gap, have the desire, detach from the outcome, and let the universe take care of the details.”
Only from this place can we manifest, and only from this place can we be truly vigilant over our perceptual state. When we live in this space we can easily see not only the perceptual pattern we are living from, and change it if we desire, but we can also feel clearly how spirit is moving us, and what we are being guided to do by the unified field of pure consciousness.
Silence is the yin aspect of our awareness, and thought is the yang. When we live right on the border, but deeply centered in silence with a greater tendency to submerge ourselves in infinite divine consciousness than to radiate too far and become lost in the world of things, then we will learn how to live with true power and potency because from this perceptual position our thoughts emanate directly from the highest aspect of ourselves without being distorted by our thoughts and beliefs.
Our actions from this place are aligned with our highest potential, our thoughts are pure and our emotions are of a high frequency. When we live on the event horizon between thought and silence, then we flow from ourhighest self and there is an immediate feedback of creation between the two infinities of the universe.

2. Let Go and Surrender to the Universe

Letting go and surrendering is not laziness and apathy. It is the process of learning how to live from a place more aligned with the highest aspects of ourselves.
Everything we have ever done, and every experience we have had is leading to our consciousness evolution. It has meaning. If we shift our perspective from being a victim of our experiences to being the recipient of a cosmic education and co-creator of our destiny, which ultimately is consciousness evolution, then we can start to tap into who we really are.
Letting go and surrendering is not laziness, and it is not giving up. It is simply centering yourself in the awareness that your dreams and all of your purest desires will unfold naturally as an expression of who you are, if you discipline yourself to get out of your own way. It is a shift to the awareness that you already are complete, and that all you need to do every day is exactly what you are inspired to do, what you’d love to do, and what makes you happy in this moment. That is the difference.
Wayne Dyer explained the shift to letting go and surrendering to the universe best when he said: “Listen to your intuitive inner voice and find what passion stirs your soul. When you do this, you’re also tapping into another face of intention: love. If you’re doing what you love and loving what you do—whatever it is—you make a living at it!”
Letting go and surrendering is a process of getting your ego out of the way so that your higher consciousness can work through you.

3. Live Without Desires, but by Divine Inspiration

Instead of living from low-level desires such as earning lots of money, achieving fame, recognition, or even respect, try living more aligned to universal principles (and thus universally aligned desires) by cultivating a deep desire to serve the consciousness evolution of humanity, to live your highest potential, and to create as fearlessly and as ego-lessly as you can. This is what I mean by living by divine inspiration.
When we can live consistently in this fashion, every one of our needs and desires will be taken care automatically.
Living by divine inspiration means to focus all of your energy on your love, and the creative self-expression that is your purpose in life, and to let the universe handle the details. We have been trained to care about the outcome of our efforts through school and society in general. We have been conditioned to seek success. But humans are far too powerful to waste their time with such low level activities.
When we focus all of our energy delving into the depths of ourselves, tapping into the universe through our inner connecting link, and then expressing the truth, love, power, inspiration and creativity that we find, then the universe will take care of the rest. The more we try and force the world to do our bidding, the poorer the results and the more frustrated we become.
If we instead focus all of our energy on living from inspiration and the boundary between thought and silence, and the deeper we submerge ourselves in that inner silence which is the cosmic ocean of pure energy/information, the brighter and more radiant and powerful we become. When we live from this space we have true power, and the universe responds.
The more that we align with our universal source, the more we become our universal source. This is the process of consciousness evolution.

Conclusion

The result of living a life aligned with these three principles and practices is that we enter into a world of magic; a brand new world and perception of reality that we achieve by disconnecting ourselves from the matrix which exists only in our thoughts. The perceptual matrix of our society is at a low level of consciousness, and the only way we can get out of it is by thinking from a brand new place within us and living from a new awareness.
In order to live from a higher level of consciousness we must stop taking orders from lower levels of consciousness, our minds. This is not an event but a process. And while there will most definitely be spontaneous shifts, or quantum moments, know that all your previous actions and work accumulate to make these quantum shifts occur.
The universe is speaking to each one of us individually and is seeking to express itself through each one of us because we are the universe … except we are resisting this aspect of ourselves and pretending to be small, limited, insignificant, and powerless. The universe is consciousness and we are consciousness, thus we must be like what we came from. There is no division. When we can continually center ourselves in silence, and learn to let go and allow ourselves to be guided by that silence, a miraculous shift will occur in our lives…
We will cease to desire from the ego. Recognition will become unimportant. Success will not be the greatest pull on our attention. Instead we will discover a magical connection within us where there is a flow of information, creativity, and knowledge, and by tapping into this flow, we will create and discover beyond our wildest dreams.
Tapping into this flow consciously will release the dam created by our minds so that the universal force, the Tao, or God, can flow through us like a mighty river, and this new energy will be of such a vibration as to radically transform our perception of reality. And we will live “in a great and wonderful world,” where “dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you will discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be,” as the great Sage Patanjali expressed so beautifully.
This is the potential within each one of us. The limitations of any individuals are in direct relationship to the degree to which they live from their mind. For as soon as we discover silence, all barriers disappear, and the universe speaks through each and every one of us equally.

The Truth Will Set You Free: Time Does Not Exist

Why Time Does Not Exist
When we ask ourselves why we think time exists, most of us would say: because we see everything changing, always. And so it is: everything in and around us is constantly changing, from beginning until the end.
The question however is: is the reason for this perpetual change to be found outside the changing subject (caused by a phenomena called time) or is all change coming from inside the changing subject itself?
I don’t think that it is hard to see that the latter is correct. That which makes things change (the cycle of life) to a flower, a human being or an animal is set by the characteristics of that particular life’s form and not by an outer cause such as time. What we call ‘time’ is just a method for measuring the ‘perpetual change’.
Because of our need to measure this perpetual change we decided to divide the ‘cyclic changes’ such as seasons and day and night, into months, twenty-four hours, minutes etc. These well-known changes are caused by the ever-moving planetary positions within our solar system and not because there exists such a thing as ‘time’.
So, there are no minutes, but we decided that after counting 60 (seconds) we say that a minute has passed. Based on minutes we calculate hours, days, months, years, centuries etc.
In this way we can count the number of heartbeats per minute, years from birth to death and we even can calculate the number of years from the Big Bang until today.
But we also say: ‘it seems as if time has stood still (in that old village), nothing has changed`.
Actually there is only NOW – in which all that is manifested appeared, changes and disappears.
Because we ourselves are part of this process of change it might be difficult for us to grasp that we ourselves too are just changing in the eternal now. If we are able to look upon ourselves from outside our moving train (witnessing our life passing by), we will probably be able to see that the now always is and that we are passing through this eternal, unmoving, NOW.
As we know, Albert Einstein became famous because of his theory of relativity. In our context it is interesting to understand that Einstein studied the method of calculating time.
He discovered: a moment in time from my position need not necessarily to be the same from your position.
I do not know whether Einstein ever stated that time does not exist at all. As for me, he had better have said so!
It may be wise and good for a better understanding to give some more examples of the methods of measuring we use daily and which are also based on non-existing principles.
Distance: a centimeter, meter, kilometer, mile, etc. do not exist but we have agreed what emptiness we bridge to call it a meter.
Weight: a gram, ounce, kilo, ton, etc. do not exist, but again, we have agreed what heaviness we will call one kilo.
These calculating methods are of course most useful and indispensable in our daily life.
Because we are not aware that time does not exist, we do not feel the need to focus on the now in which our life takes place. However, it would have been much wiser if our ancestors (and we) had done so in the past. Read on to see why…

The Eternal Now

The infinite space of the universe extends to `the place where we live’. Even so: who, when and where we are, we have appeared and will disappear in the immutable reality of space, the void in which all changes take place.
The Greek scholars from the past called this void: ‘Being’ or the ‘Absolute’ because it refers to that which cannot be NOT, which is absolute.
What more can be said about this absolute: it is unchangeable (but all that appears in it changes constantly), it is omnipresent (there is no place where it is not) and it is timeless (no beginning, no change, no ending).
During history there have always been people who were able to see through daily life’s reality and who discovered the absolute reality of the eternal now (they dis-covered that which was covered before).
Surprisingly this discovery of the absolute turned out to be of the utmost importance for the one who had such an experience. An intense awareness of the eternal now can be considered as an existential experience. One realizes: my existence is fundamentally connected with the eternal now, the timeless.
In our culture and ‘time’ transcendental experiences like these are quite rare and distrusted by philosophers and psychologists, but in former days such experiences were considered as being mystical or religious. It has been like this for thousands of years, in different cultures and periods of time.
It is quite remarkable that people who live from the awareness of the absolute, always are pictured with a circle (aureole) around their head. A circle has no beginning and no end and in this way symbolizes the timeless, the eternal now.
It is obvious that artists in former ages, in different cultures and different times, never could have communicated how to depict the ‘knower of the absolute’.
It is amazing that ‘they who live from the timelessness’ always are presented with the same type of symbolism. See the saints and sages in Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism.
With this reference to the great world religions (in Islam picturing of holy people is not permitted) the meaning of living from the eternal (the timelessness) gets an extra dimension. It is not just that ‘someone has occasionally seen through the illusion of time’ but it looks as if the understanding of the reality of the eternal is so impressive, that it may have been the beginning of religious thinking of mankind.

The Meaning of the Absolute Within Weligion

Above I said: ‘An intense awareness of the eternal now can be considered as an existential experience. One realizes: my existence is fundamentally connected with the eternal now, the timeless`.
In former cultures these mystical experiences and their possible meaning were thoroughly investigated. As a result of this all major cultures concluded (although formulated by each in its own way): living from the awareness of the timeless, the absolute, gives people insight into the meaning of life and gives them real happiness (‘liberation’).
How this conclusion is to be found in each of the great world religions (excluding Islam in this context) will be shown in following examples:
Hinduism: the essence of the oldest of the great world religions is to be found in the Upanishads (written down in the period between 800 and 300 BC). These writings contain the quintessence of an age old, from generation to generation orally passed on spiritual tradition.
The topics covered run always to: That (the timeless, the absolute) is what you are in your innermost self (the mantra Tat Tvam Asi). Or: the absolute and the visible world are connected (Sat, the absolute and Ti, all that is, are connected, Yam. This became the mantra Satyam).
And also: real happiness for a human being is not to be found in temporary (changing) things, but only in the unchangeable, the timeless absolute. Consequently people are advised to conquer their need for temporary pleasures, on behalf of the liberating insight into the reality of the relationship with the eternal now, the absolute.
The original Hindu scriptures were written in the Sanskrit language. In this language the mystical visions of people from very long ago are presented to us with a timeless relevance.
Buddhism: like all great cultures, Hinduism too went through a period of relapse after a period of strength. When realization of the mystic reality of existence threatens to be replaced by believing in a transcendental power (God), the profound meaning of a on realty (the absolute) based spirituality gets lost and confusion arises.
This has been the reason for Buddhism to manifest. About 2500 years ago Prince Gautama realized the unity of the essence of man with the timeless, the absolute, and he became the Buddha (enlightened one).
In order to avoid confusion as mentioned in Hindu culture, he did not talk about the highest state of spiritual knowledge. He just called that state ‘Nirvana’. This word literally means ‘extinction’. This refers to the bright (motionless) state of self-awareness which remains when the restless thinking (the ego) is extinguished (meaning, came to rest).
With this living from the changeable (time) has evolved into living from the unchangeable (timelessness).
Christianity: Like Hinduism (and so Buddhism) has its roots in the distant past, Christianity is rooted in the old Jewish culture. Here too people were (are) aware of the ‘bond’ between God and man (that this bond applies to the Jews exclusively must be a ‘misunderstanding’).
The culture in which Jesus appeared was spiritually of a much lower level than the Hindu culture of those days, where the unity of the human soul and the absolute was (is) the main issue of the scriptures.
Obviously Jesus himself was very well aware of this unity, as his words are telling us. He had to speak in parables however, because people in his days were not ready yet to understand profound metaphysical teachings. By speaking in parables he hoped to bring people to self-knowledge and eventually to the liberating insight into man’s relationship with the absolute, which he called father or God.
The best known sayings of the ‘son of God’ are: ‘I and the father are one’ and ‘the kingdom of heaven is within you’. These are very strong expressions of his vision of the unity of man and the timeless, the absolute.
It is not so that only the ancient Hindu sages, Buddha and Jesus fathomed the ‘secret of life’. They kindled the flame of insight and many dedicated their life to it, no doubt with all experiences of hardship and fulfillment belonging to the spiritual path.
Probably it also has not been so that the non-existence of time has been exclusively taught in the spiritual education of people in the past. But we can be sure that the ‘saints’ in religious cultures have seen through the illusion of time (remember the symbol of the timeless, the aureole).
All religions have developed their own basic values and formed their own traditions. It is very disappointing however to see that religions in general failed to reach their common goal: to guide people toward the liberating insight into their relationship with that which became them: the timeless absolute (God). If this had been different, the world would be in a completely different situation.
What went wrong and which are the consequences?

The Catastrophe of Not Knowing the Timeless, the Absolute

It goes wrong with the passing on of spiritual knowledge, when ‘the student wants to be the master’.
In ancient India the sages tried to prevent ‘spiritual pollution’ by sharing their knowledge only with initiates. In our Christian tradition something very amazing (‘catastrophic’) happened in about the year 300. The Christian way of life became ‘institutionalized’. This means that people were supposed to no longer try to understand and to follow Jesus in their own way, but a church organization was established which controls the Christian doctrines even today. This means that the interpretation of the message of Jesus was left in the hands of people (always men) of who Christians had to accept had a better understanding of what Jesus wanted them to understand than they themselves and that they (the church) laid down conscientiously what they should believe and what not.
Impulses from people to deepen or to renew the official Christian doctrine were (are) not appreciated and for hundreds of years people even ended up at the stake when they deviated from the official doctrine (remember for instance the Cathars, who were exterminated to the last man).
In this way the teaching of Jesus was transformed into a belief and the incentive for people to obtain wisdom themselves was put out. Even worse: actually ‘believing’ became another word for ‘hoping’ …
Thus Christianity gives hope in exchange for loyalty to the doctrine.
What is this? A crime against humanity or a blessing for humanity?
The consequences of the omitting of the incentive for people to realize the timeless themselves are of an importance beyond our comprehension. Where religion should touch a man in the very depth of his being (in the euphoria of experiencing unity with the radiant and inexhaustible source of life) a superficial notion of profound teachings remains.
Not only can this lead to doubt and rejection, but also our deeply hidden ethical consciousness (which wants us to act and to be in harmony with the timeless which has become us) is not or insufficiently touched.
Thus superficiality instead of spirituality became the foundation of our Christian society.
The disasters which this superficiality has brought mankind are easy to define. To name just a few: from crusades, religious persecution, slavery, imperialism and world wars (including the Holocaust), we come to the scourges of our time such as unbridled capitalism (‘culture of greed’) and the exploitation of our beautiful earth (resulting in climate change and energy shortage).
At the individual level, the lack of depth of our Christian culture leads to selfishness (insufficient empathy for our neighbors), stress (focus on the result rather than the correctness of an action), blurring of moral values (anything should be possible) and confusion (‘what is the meaning of my life’).
As western civilization based on Christianity has been dominant for centuries in many parts of the world (with misplaced arrogance versus a misunderstood eastern depth) the spiritual superficiality has spread widely.
Today the by Christianity initiated estrangement from our source (started by eliminating the search for the transcendental, the eternal now) seems not to reverse anymore. Even more, in recent years, by the ever developing communication technology, a new dimension has been added. Uncritically we led the younger generation believe that they need to be ‘connected anytime and anywhere with anybody’. It is clear that in particular commercial motives are behind this. No doubt the strategy of ‘consumer control’ will be continued (via the Google-glasses, cell phones and chip), creating a kind of robotic human beings. No free will and a little pill at each sign of displeasing behavior.

How to Move On

The lack of the knowledge of the transcendental reality (the timeless that has become us and the entire world) is not felt by humans as such. We blame our ‘feelings of unease’ on various visible reasons such as our job, our relationships, society, etc. If it stays like this, our fate will stay in the hands of the dominating powers in the world (politics, economics). Will thus improve our situation? If in doubt, consider the following:
Wouldn’t it be great if the entire world should understand that what we call ‘time’ actually is our own process of change? A huge cosmic process happening in the eternal now!
Wouldn’t this awaken us and make us realize that all together and inspired by the eternal now, we can take the next step in our spiritual evolution?
This really would make a difference. People should strive to adapt to life as it should be, which means taking responsibility for the earth and its inhabitants.
The insight into the illusion of time focusses us on the NOW. With this we stand at the door of mystical knowledge about our origin and destiny. Remember what Jesus said? ‘Knock and thou shalt be opened’.
Elaborate a little?
If you really understand that time does not exist and that your life takes place in the eternal now, then focus on this eternal now daily and try to hold to that for a while (‘knocking on the door’). One day the door will open and you will see: ‘It’ is the same on both sides. God is immanent as well as transcendent …
The realization of the timeless (the absolute, reality) widely, could be the axis that sets a global spiritual awakening in motion. This will bring forth the best in people and give the so badly needed ‘wisdom’ a chance to transform the world.
Thus, my advice: don’t throw your watch away, but try to live from the eternal NOW …
