BHA and BHT (Butylated Hydroxyanisole and Butylated Hydroxytoluene)
BHA and BHT are Petroleum-derived antioxidants that are used as preservatives used to preserve fats and oils. They prevent foods from oxidizing and spoiling too quickly.You’ll find it in breakfast cereals, chewy granola bars, desserts, candy, chewing gum, potato chips, vegetable oils, shortening, butter and sausage. Side effects: BHA and BHT are oxidants which form potentially cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body. Other side effects of these food additives include elevated cholesterol, liver and kidney damage, infertility, sterility, immune disorders, increased susceptibility to carcinogens, and behavioral problems. The Department of Health and Human Services classifies the preservative as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”
